Students in Mrs. Ogden's and Ms. Walton's 2/3 class had an awesome opportunity to attend a concert on Friday, September 20th during school. The best part about the field trip was we didn't have to ride a bus, pay money, or miss any of our normal school routine! The concert was a live internet broadcast from Avery Elementary, in Hilliard City Schools! The performance ensemble we heard was Carpe Diem String Quartet. The group has a partnership with PNC Arts Alive to promote music concerts in school, and broadcast it online using USTREAM technology. Not only did we view part of the concert, students were able to ask questions via live chat with the composers as an audience member. The program was specifically called "Numbers" and focused on how musicians and composers utilize math and numeric patterns. You can even see our chat dialogue from Mrs. Ogden's class, and the response we get back! We have been learning about instrument families and it was a great chance to see and hear string instruments in a live venue, as well as meet a real composer. |

One of the best parts about the elementary music classroom is the opportunity to learn and play at the SAME time. This week, K/1 classes have really been exploring the steady beat and our singing voices. You can see Mrs. Daker's class singing and playing our Bluebird song and game. Later, we will discover sol, mi, la pitches of the musical scale. But for now, we'll enjoy using our voice as an instrument with our friends during music class! 4th and 5th grade students have been working on this body rhythm. Soon, we will transfer it to instruments for more fun!
This week, we are moving on with our learning to include new and exciting skills! The K/1 classes have been singing and playing using our voices as well as visiting an apple orchard through music! The 2/3 groups are learning all about John Philip Sousa and even experiencing some samples from the OSU marching band! Grade 4/5 has been playing both boomwhackers and xylophones as they enhance their singing with accompaniment while also singing in canons.
We have been busy this week getting to know each other as well as dusting off our music skills from summer break! Above, you can see some of our 2/3 students practicing rhythms and melodies on the SmartBoard. To the left, you can see our K/1 class playing a game of Five Little Ducks as they sing. If you'd like to schedule a time to visit music class this year, please arrange it with Mrs. Kennedy. We would LOVE to have you come make music with us. |
